CIMPA-UNESCO-BURKINA FASO School

Index Theory and Interactions with Physics

Objectives :
The aim of the school is to introduce the audience to one of the pillars of 20th century mathematics, namely index theory, a topic at the cross-roads of various areas of mathematics including geometry, topology and analysis, with many applications in theoretical physics. Index theory is still a very active area of research with many intersting recent developments around the family index theorem and the noncommutative analog of the classical index theorem

Organizers:
Akry Koulibaly (Ougadougou, Burkina Faso), Sylvie Paycha (Clermont-Ferrand, France)

Local organizing committee:
Mikaïlou Compaoré,  Marie-Françoise Ouédraogo,  Nakelgbamba Boukary Pilabré

Working languages:
Mainly French with some talks in English

Date and location:
May 21-29, 2009, University of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

Scientific program: (abstracts)
Five mini-courses (around 5 hours each) will take place in the morning with two of one and a half hour sessions a day. Talks, exercise sessions and informal discussions will take place in the afternoon.

  • Introduction to K-theory : Hervé Oyono (Clermont-Ferrand, France)

  • K-theory and some applications: Adéremi Kuku (ICTP/Nigeria)

  • The Atiyah-Singer index theorem: Moulay Benameur (Metz, France)

  • Index theorems and anomalies : Denis Perrot (Lyon, France)

  • Groupoïds and index theorem for stratified spaces : Jean-Marie Lescure (Clermont-Ferrand, France)
  • A few analytic tools underlying the analytic index theorem: Sylvie Paycha (Clermont-Ferrand, France)

Prerequisites:
This school is meant for Master students with some knowledge of functional analysis and differential geometry as well as for any mathematician willing to get acquainted with index theory and its applications
