IRAQ

The Iraqi-french cooperation in mathematics started in 2000, when Professor Adil Naoum, a member of the Iraqi Science Academy, requested the support of the French Embassy in Baghdad to help his colleagues mathematicians, who were facing difficult conditions. This request was forwarded to CIMPA, who organized a visit of four mathematicians. Further scientific visits of French mathematicians took place in 2001 and 2002. Following the request of the French Embassy in Baghdad, special funds are given each year to CIMPA by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs ; they enable young mathematicians from Iraq to participate to the CIMPA research schools which take place in neighboring countries.

After a visit in Iraqi Kurdistan in October 2008 by Mohammad Eftekhari and Michel Waldschmidt, several projects have been planed, some of which involve the CIMPA. A major event has been "The First Iraqi-French Mathematics Conference in Cooperation with College of Science, Salahaddin University-Erbil" from November 14 to 18, 2009. This conference, organized at the initiative of the Cooperation and Cultural Service of the French Embassy in Iraq, received the support of the CIMPA and was held under the auspices of the two main French mathematical societies, SMF (Société Mathématique de France) and SMAI (Société de Mathématiques Appliquées et Industrielles). A report (in English) is available on the internet.

Further activities related to this cooperation include visits of high scientific level from Iraqi mathematicians in French mathematics departments, as well as scholarships (PhD or PostDoc) for young students from Iraq. CIMPA also contributes to help getting access to the existing documentation and to promote the use of new information technologies.

It is expected that a regional Kurdish cooperation will be initiated after the Erbil 2009 conference. Furthermore,CIMPA Schools or Workshops should be organized in Kurdistan in the near future.

IRAN

CIMPA organized research schools in Iran on a regular basis (2005 at IASBS in Zanjan, 2006, 2008 at IPM Tehran - the CIMPA School scheduled at IPM at the end of June 2009 has been posponed). Several further joint activities took place, involving mathematicians from Iran and from France. The most important one is a Irano-European Master in Mathematics initiated by Christian Duhamel, who was attaché scientifique de coopération from 2006 to 2009 at the Cooperation and Cultural Service of the French Embassy in Iran. A major goal was an European extension of this Master involving more countries.

However, as long as the situation does not improve, no activity of CIMPA can take place in Iran. But our Iranian colleagues know we support them.

PAKISTAN

The first CIMPA Research School in Pakistan was organized in 2007. The Director of CIMPA at that time, Michel Jambu, participated to this event and wrote a report (in French).

For security reasons, CIMPA cancelled its participation to a Research School scheduled in Lahore in 2008 (this school took place, there was no trouble, but with no participant outside of Pakistan). CIMPA organized another Research School on "Combinatorial and computational aspects of commutative algebra" from February 21 to 28, 2009 - see the report. It took place in the Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences (ASSMS), GC University, Lahore. Following this CIMPA research school, several activities are considered : visits of young mathematicians from Pakistan to French institutes, visits of French mathematicians in Pakistan to give graduate courses.

The report (in french) of the participation by Michel Waldschmidt to the program "French Science Tour in Pakistan" stresses the importance of developing cooperations between mathematicians from France and from Pakistan. Any activity in Pakistan needs to receive the agreement of the French Embassy in Pakistan, who can judge the security situation.

NEPAL

A preliminary visit took place in November 2008. Nepal may become the center of a regional network which would enable mathematicians from neighboring countries, including both India and Pakistan, to meet. A first instance should be in 2010, for the first CIMPA School in Nepal on "Number Theory in Cryptography and its Applications", which is scheduled to take place from July 19 to 31, 2010, in Kathmandu University, School of Sciences (Mathematics Group), Dhulikhel. This meeting will be a satellite conference for the International Congress of Mathematicians ICM 2010] which will meet in Hyderabad (India) at the end of August 2010.

A preliminary course at the end of 2009, National School on Number Theory and cryptography 2009, will prepare the Nepalese students and enable them to understand better the courses which are going to be given six months later. Kanhayia Jha requested Kalyan Chakraborty to deliver these courses. CIMPA is supporting two young mathematicians from Bhutan who are going to participate to this Winter School in Kathmandu.

BHUTAN

So far, there is no mathematical school in Bhutan, but one may expect it will grow and CIMPA is willing to contribute. There are only two Bhutanese mathematicians in the University having an academic grade, one has a MSc and the other a BSc. Both of them attended a CIMPA Research School (Mumbai in 2008 and Lahore in 2009). They will attend the 2009 National School in Nepal. The visit by Sinnou David and Michel Waldschmidt at the end of 2008 gave rise to a report (in French).

INDIA

CIMPA Research Schools took place on a regular basis in India : 1995, 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2008. CIMPA would like that an earlier agreement with NBHM be renewed. An Indo-French Mathematical Conference took place in December 2008 at IMSc (Institute of Mathematical Science), Chennai, it was organized jointly by the SMF (Société Mathématique de France) and the Ramanujan Mathematical Society. In August 2010, the International Congress of Mathematicians ICM 2010] in Hyderabad will give another opportunity to French and Indian mathematicians to tighten their links.

The action of CIMPA is directed towards developing countries. Its scientific level makes of India a partner who does not need assistance. Nevertheless, CIMPA Research Schools in remote areas of a country like India, who are not closely connected with the main research centers, may be relevant.

OTHER COUNTRIES

AFGHANISTAN

CIMPA would be willing to help mathematicians from Afghanistan, for instance by requesting the French Embassy to invite some of them for a scientific stay in French mathematics departments or laboratories. However the realisation of this project did not start yet, due to the difficulty to identify them.

UZBEKISTAN

CIMPA supported the ICTP Research School on "Dynamical systems, Singularity theory and Perverse Sheaves" which took place from October 6 to 21, 2009, in Samarkand. A report has been written by Fouad El Zein.

SRI LANKA

A CIMPA Research School was organised in Sri Lanka at the end of 2004. Further activities in this country would be welcome.
